In 2012, I was asked to choreograph for EDC or Expressions Dance Company’s Launch Pad Season. Launch Pad was a place for independent choreographers to choreograph a 10-minute duet with a company dancer. In my case, it was Samantha Mitchell and Michelle Barnett, and a piece inspired by the term ‘Single White Female Syndrome’, as coined in the 1992 film ‘Single White Female’ by Barbet Schroeder. The idea explored when flattery becomes stalking and when someone who begins to resemble your mirror image is constantly in your face.
Rehearsals commenced with Sam and Michelle learning some key moment traits in my work— the fusion of contemporary dance with more clunky and pop-locked movements. From here, we began to work from these phrases to develop the material and story of the piece.
